Throwing a party? Just want to decorate the house for the changing of the year? Whatever the case, here are some really cute ideas to celebrate ringing in 2008.

Shawl or Shrug

If an elegant sleeveless dress is in the New Year’s Eve Party plan, be sure to take along a beautiful handmade shawl or shrug. So many gorgeous dresses are out there for this evening, but many of them assume the wearers have fur—it can be very cold that night.

Free patterns for stunning shawls and shrugs can be found easily on the internet, at the library, or probably in books lying around the house. They can be crocheted quite quickly with larger hooks or needles, and if absolutely drop-dead yarn is used, the results are devastatingly beautiful. Pick out any color and texture for the yarn, and the results are limitless.

Evening Bag

There are literally thousands of free evening bag patterns available on the internet. Most veteran crocheters and knitters have such patterns around the house, too. Gold, silver, bronze, black, or any color yarn will work, so no matter what the outfit is, the bag can match it perfectly. Use a large hook or large needles, and this project works up in no time.

Bell Shape

Use the bell shape to make potholders, wall hangers, and appliqués. One fabulous free pattern for a Bell can be made out of any color or size yarn, and using any size crochet hook to make whatever sized bell is desired.

Wire Wine Glass Charms

These charms function by helping party guests more easily keep track of their wine glasses. Make the charms in different colors and use absolutely any theme at all. Unique beads added to the wires make these completely original. Think mini-clocks, dice, the number 2008, or party hats.

A nice pattern is Black Purl’s Wine Charms. It’s quite simple, and can be changed a bit to allow for some beginning design very easily.

Think of the charms as very tiny bracelets, and Kate Pullen’s article on Designing Beaded Jewelry is quite helpful.

Crochet a Clock

Everyone watches the time on New Year’s Eve. Take advantage of that by crocheting an original clock. An adorable picture of one is posted below from Kendra’s Yarn Tales, but there are plenty of other possibilities; one can be made using a square piece of wood, a knit or crochet square, a clock set from a craft store, and some numbers, buttons, or other markers.

This is the ideal time to start designing. In fact, take a New Year’s Resolution to do just that.

Happy New Year to You and Yours!
