Discover the world of secret pal knitting, crochet, and spinning swaps. Geared towards crafters that keep their identities secret and swap goodies in the mail.

In keeping with the theme of knitting and crocheting for others, this article will be focusing on something that is gaining much momentum within the online community of knitters, crocheters, and spinners: secret pal swaps. A secret pal swap is an organized event taking place over as little time as a month or as much as a few months, where people sign up and receive somebody who they are to spoil and somebody who will be spoiling them. It's a spectacular way to meet new people, and also a way to give and receive wonderful gifts. There are many kinds of secret pal swaps; some of them are as specific as swapping socks and sock related knit items such as the Sockret Pal Swap others are as open to encompass knitting, crocheting, as well as spinning, such as the upcoming Secret Pal 9 (the ninth run of these kind).

A recently completed secret pal swap, the One Skein Secret Pal Swap which was launched in conjunction with the publishing of the book "One Skein" by Leigh Radford had a successful run. This swap ran for three months - the first two months you send one skein of yarn to your pal (keeping your identity secret) and then on the last month you make something for your pal that takes up no more than one skein of yarn. Another recent swap was Secret Pal 8, where for three months you spoil somebody and in turn you are spoiled by somebody else. There is something inherently entertaining in keeping your identity secret and spoiling somebody while you in turn are spoiled by somebody with a secret identity. What struck me as the most interesting thing about this swaps, is that it's not necessarily about sending and receiving, but the way you get to meet people. Gift giving just for the sake of it to make somebody happy is a fun thing, and it's always a treat to receive something in the mail.
