The Knitting Guild Association (TKGA) is a non-profit organization dedicated solely to knitting and knitters. This well-respected organization offers classes, correspondence courses, and even certification in the Master Knitting Program. Teach knitting, or just become a better knitter with these offerings. Learn to Knit CourseThe “Learn to Knit Course” is a thorough introductory class. Written instructions and illustrations lead the knitter step by step to learn stitches, knitting abbreviations, and knitting terms. The coursework materials are excellent reference resources for all knitters, even after the class is finished. Send sample swatches to the TKGA Learn to Knit Committee for a review and critique. Basics, Basics, Basics CourseThe “Basics, Basics, Basics Course” will make any hand knitter familiar with the same basic format that is followed in the Master Knitter Program in three clear and concise lessons. The importance of gauge is stressed, as is its variation when using different stitches. Mosaic Knitting CourseThe “Mosaic Knitting Course” teaches mosaic patterns, which involve two or more colors using one color in each row. In six lessons, the mosaic technique is used to create a finished garment. Pattern reading and graphs are also covered. Requirements to complete the course include written materials and a successfully finished sweater. The Professional Finishing Techniques Course (Hand Knit)Garment “finishing” is the mark of a good knitter and a quality garment. This four-lesson course reveals scores of hints and tips while working on a number of finishing techniques. Subjects include smooth shoulder seams, side seams, sleeves, neck finishes and edges for cardigans. Requirements to complete the course include written materials, worked samples and a successfully knitted and finished cardigan. There is a time limit on this course. Certification for Knitting JudgesMake a living in knitting. Become a successful knitting judge. Syllabus includes learning the criteria for judging knitting while studying different types of competitions and how judging methods vary. There is a two-year time limit to complete the course. Machine Knitting CourseCreative juices get a boost when a knitting machine is implemented. This beginner’s level course is a low-key, enjoyable learning experience. Play with the machine and get familiar with it, turn the knobs, change the needle positions and look at the results.Complete various swatches, including casting on, binding off, and knitting in between, as well as increases, decreases and short rows. Swatches and projects will be reviewed and returned. Cast On magazine prints the names of all graduates. Have fun and get recognized while taking the next step in knitting.
