Knitting or Crochet Hen Night

Celebrate a Wedding With a Party for Knitters and Non-Knitters Alike

Knitters looking for a hen night with a difference might like to consider a night of knitting and crochet with the girls! This is a great way to have fun and be creative.

Knitters and crocheters who are looking for something a little different from their hen night might like to consider a girls' night out with a knitting and crochet theme. This is a fun alternative to the traditional "last night out with the girls", combining celebration with creativity.

All that is required is a couple of bottles of wine and some nibbles plus a few needles and hooks, some balls of yarn and plenty of creativity! A number of small knitted items can be made during an evening as well as a lot of chat and laughter. Even non-knitters and crocheters will enjoy participating, and besides having a fun night out they may also learn a new skill that will last a lifetime!

Here are some tips for the perfect knitting and crochet hen night!

  • Keep it Small! - While the idea of knitting or crocheting a wonderful lace scarf may sound great in principle, this is simply impractical for an evening's entertainment. Instead think of small items like a small purse, accessories and jewelry or a small sample square that can be used as a coaster. A range of quick-to-finish items such as this will ensure that there is something available for knitters of all abilities.
  • Easy to Use yarns – The combination of beautiful white yarns with a glass or two of wine and some finger food may produce less than perfect results! Keep the fine yarns for another occasion and look for fun and fancy yarns for a hen night. A small purse knitted in an eyelash yarn will be quick to knit up, and the textured yarn will hide the odd uneven stitch.
  • Lots of Patterns – The Internet is awash with excellent free knitting and crochet patterns. These are available for free download and can be printed as required. Print a range of patterns for the hen night so that there is plenty to inspire even the most reluctant yarn crafter!
  • Make it Fun – A knitting party needn't be dull and boring. Plan a few knitting and crochet related games – word games that use knitting and crochet terms or puns about yarn are always fun. Every party needs music; therefore ensure that there is a good selection of party CDs available.
  • For Beginners - Nominate a knitter or crocheter with a lot of patience to be the tutor for the evening. Her job will be to help beginners and to unravel any mistakes – hence the requirement for patience!

Ideas for Hen Night Knitting

  • Make jewelry to wear to the wedding. Craft wire is easy to knit with and is available in a wide range of colors. Take a look at this pattern for a Crochet Silver Ring for a simple project that is ideal for completing in a night.
  • Knit items for the wedding. Knitted flowers, for instance, are great to wear as button holes or corsages. See Wedding Knitting and Crochet for more ideas!
  • Create a special blanket for the newly-weds. Everyone attending the hen night could knit a square and this is later sewn together to form a special blanket.

A knitting themed hen night makes an interesting change from the traditional night out and the memories – as well as the knitted items – will be long cherished!
