Crocheted leaves really doll up craft projects; they give springtime projects a lovely, feminine touch. Use thick, luscious chenille or dainty, cotton crochet thread to make leaves of any size, texture, and look that is so desired.

Try this free pattern out, and feel free to make it as big, as small, as hearty or as delicate as desired.

Materials

The example pictured here was made with size 6 chenille yarn and a K-hook. The leaf is rather large—about 3 inches long. But, it can be made smaller by using a smaller hook/thinner yarn, or it can be made larger by adding on to the rounds.

Special Stitches

Sc2tog: Sc2tog is a decrease stitch in crochet. To execute, begin sc as usual but stop at the final pull through. Instead, Insert hook into the next stitch, yo again, pull up, yo once more, and pull through all three loops on the hook.

Sc3tog: Sc3tog is a larger decrease in crochet. To execute, begin Sc2tog as described in the previous paragraph, but stop right before the final yo. Instead, insert hook into the next stitch, yo once more, and pull through all four loops on the hook.

The Pattern

Foundation: Chain 5.

Stem Row: Make 1 single crochet in 2nd chain (ch) from hook, and in each chain to end of row. This should produce 14 sc.

Row 1: Ch1, working into the side of the last sc, and 3sc in end stitch. Ch1 and turn.

Row 2: 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc. This makes 5 sc’s in this row. Ch1 and turn.

Row 3: 1 sc in each sc to end. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 4: 1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, 2sc in next sc, 1 sc in last sc. This totals 7 sc in this row. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 5: 1 sc in each sc to end. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 6: 1 sc in first sc, **sc2tog, 1 sc in next sc** twice, for a total of 5 sc in this row. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 7: 1 sc in each sc to end. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 8: Sc2tog, 1 sc in next sc, sc2tog. This should bring the number of stitches down to 3. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 9: 1 sc in each sc to end. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 10: Sc3tog to make the tip of the leaf.

Fasten off.
