Make Decorative Eggs for Easter Out of Scrap Yarn

Feb 27, 2008 Renee Blixt

Crochet Easter Eggs using this free pattern; make them out of a favorite yarn or out of yarn scraps.

Crochet a three-dimensional egg that measures about four by three inches, or leave it unfilled to create a “double knit” two-dimensional egg that measures about five by six inches. They make fabulous hostess gifts, and kids love them, too.

Materials

  • Be creative - try different hook sizes and various yarns. A J-hook works well with worsted weight yarn, but don’t feel limited by that. If smaller eggs are in order, an F hook also works well with worsted weight yarn.
  • Try fuzzy yarn - the eggs turn out adorably and look very cute when placed together in a basket.
  • Work eggs in solids or stripes - Variegated yarns produce a lovely marbleized effect.
  • Place solid eggs in a basket for a delightful centerpiece.
  • Consider surface embellishment to add names to the eggs after they are made. They make great personalized gifts to present on Easter.
  • If making potholders, be certain to use cotton yarn; acrylic and others will actually burn when placed next to heat or hot items.

Pattern

Round 2: 2 single crochet (sc) in each sc. Mark end of rounds, but work in a spiral so that no seam is visible. 8 sc.

Round 4: Repeat. 16 sc.

Round 5: Repeat. 20 sc.

Round 6: Repeat. 24 sc.

Round 7: Repeat. 28 sc.

Round 8: Work even.

Round 9: Work even.

Round 10: Increase 2 sc evenly spaced throughout the round. 30 sc.

Round 11: Work even.

Round 12: Work even.

Round 13: Work even.

Round 14: Work even.

Round 15: Decrease 2 sc evenly spaced throughout the round. To decrease, draw up a loop in each of 2 sc, yarn over and pull through 3 loops on hook. 28 sc.

Round 16: Decrease 4 sc evenly spaced throughout the round. 24 sc.

Round 17: Decrease 4 sc evenly spaced throughout the round. 20 sc.

Round 18: Repeat round 15. 18 sc.

Round 19: Decrease 3 sc evenly spaced throughout the round. 15 sc. At this point, stuff the egg with cotton if three dimensional eggs are being made.

(If flat eggs are desired instead, do not stuff the eggs. Complete them and lay them flat. Press or block them if necessary.)

Round 20: Decrease in next 2 stitches 8 times. Sew up the hole and tuck the tail in.

Enjoy.
