Charitable organizations are always ready to accept hand crocheted items. Consider giving your crochet items to those who need them most.

Crocheting for charity is a wonderful way to share your hobby with those who may need it most. From newborn babies to seniors needing lapghans, your crochet talent can be put to use for your community. One doesn’t need to look to far to find a charitable outlet for their crochet items, either. A call to your local hospital will typically yield great results. Pediatric units need layette outfits, newborn hats, and baby blankets. Premies are always in need of smaller outfits, and crocheting these items are always greatly appreciated. The NICU is always in need of hand crocheted items as well.

Where to Donate your Crochet Items

Nursing homes, hospices, and senior centers are other good places to check with. Lapghans are the perfect size for the elderly who may be wheelchair bound and will help keep them warm. Another great project that is readily accepted by nursing homes are slippers. Creating slippers in a variety of sizes ensures that they will find a recipient. Veterinarians also welcome Lapghans, as they use them with injured animals

Children who are in abuse or neglect situations will appreciate the comfort of crocheted teddy bears and dolls. By checking with local government and social service agencies you can find the right organization to donate your hand crocheted items to. Other charitable outlets may include cancer patients, emergency rooms, orphanages, and churches.

Crochet Charity Tips

It’s important to ask the organization if they have any rules regarding the item you are considering donating. For example, a hospital may have a preference regarding the style or size of a blanket. Certain yarns may also be preferred by some organization over others. Safety is always of the utmost concern when crocheting for charity and special care should be taken to ensure that there are no loose ends on any projects. If changing yarn colors, always crochet over the ends of the yarn to ensure that they won’t unwind. A good tip is to use a small dab of fabric glue on the ends of yarn to make certain that they will remain intact.

Always choose yarn carefully when crocheting charity projects. Make certain that the yarn is easily washable, appropriate for the project, and that you use the recommended hook size for the project. Baby items should always be crafted in baby yarn to ensure that it is soft and gentle on delicate skin. It’s also recommended to wash the item before giving it to the charity. This ensures that the crochet item will not shrink or have any other problems when used by the recipient. Crocheting for charity is a richly rewarding experience.
