Create a beautiful selection of crochet flowers to use as embellishments for clothes and accessories. Try varying the weight of yarn and size of hook to make flowers in a wide range of sizes.
In this article, a double strand of size 10 crochet cotton of white and variegated pastels was used with a size 5 steel hook. These made flowers that were about one inch in diameter. Only a small amount of thread is needed for each flower.
Holding both strands of thread, chain 5 and join with a slip stitch into ring.
** Chain 4. Into the ring, work 3 double treble crochet stitches, chain 4, 1 single crochet, and repeat from ** 4 times. Five petals are made. Fasten off.
These lovely little flowers have lots of potential for different looks when simple changes are made.
Smaller Flowers: Work with smaller thread, such as size 20 cotton crochet thread, and a small hook (size 9 steel is a good choice) to make a smaller flower.
Try making a flower with less petals. The results when color-changes are added are endless in number. Use green thread and only make 3 or 4 petals, and it’s a clover for St. Patrick’s Day.
Larger Flowers: Use size 3 cotton crochet thread and a size B crochet hook. Go even larger until the desired size is made.
Using a larger hook with thread will achieve a very lacy look. Using a thicker thread with a smaller hook will give quite a dense look.
Try making a flower with more petals. Twelve petals will make a sunflower, and would be beautiful made with yellow and brown threads. Reminder: when more petals are added, the foundation ring may need to be a bit bigger.
Add Beads: Add a bead to the center of one for an elegant touch. Add more beads or even sequins throughout the petals of for a more “snazzy” look.
These flowers add a lovely feminine touch to almost anything.
Headband: Make 10 violets, some in dark purple and some in lavender. Some of the violets can even have both shades in them. Sew the violets onto a fabric headband.
Scarf: Add flowers to the ends of a scarf in a freeform manner. Function and beauty work together, and make a plain scarf lacy and feminine.
Add the flowers to hats, collars of shirts, sweaters, sneakers, hems of pants—almost anywhere. This is one pattern to always keep in mind when working with fabric.
