Crochet and knit gifts this Easter! We look at combining making great Easter gifts with learning some new skills and techniques.
With a little bit of crochet or knitting knowledge it is possible to make some lovely Easter gifts. However, have you thought about combining making Easter gifts with learning some new crochet or knitting skills and techniques?
Easter gifts, for instance knitted Easter Bunnies are great for beginners as the size of these items are typically quite small and do not present too much of a daunting task! The fact that the projects are typically small means that they are not only great for beginners, but they also present an ideal way to learn new skills and techniques. For instance if you are yet to have mastered knitting with double pointed needles, before embarking on a complicated sock pattern, have a look at patterns for knitted eggs which are worked in the round. Not only will this give you some experience of knitting with double pointed needles (dpn’s), but it will also introduce shaping. The benefit of working on a small project is that can easily be ripped back and started again if necessary – without that jaw-jarring angst ridden feeling experienced when discovering that half a sock has to be ripped back!
A good example of a crochet project that will present the maker with a challenge whilst embarking on a small project is the making of crocheted egg covers. The crochet egg covers are based on Victorian egg decorations, whereby a blown egg would be placed into one of these delightful covers and used as a decoration. An excellent pattern for seven different crocheted egg covers using a range of techniques can be found here. If you look through the egg covers here you will see a whole spectrum of crochet skills that can be tried, including filet crochet, different stitches such as knot stitch and Irish Crochet roses.
There are some other great ideas for knitters and crocheters on the internet. Take a look at this knitted bunny, he is cleverly made from a square and can be adjusted to any size. Think knitting origami! This clever pattern uses a single square and folds it into a bunny shape. This would be a fantastic project for a new knitter and perhaps a great way that a youngster could be taught over the holiday period. The ease of the knitted square would hold their attention whist the actually formation of the bunny is bound to be of interest to knitters and non knitters alike!
Other patterns and designs to look for include crocheted eggs which can be worked in different colors and are an ideal way to learn about shaping and using colors in crochet. The eggs can be made in a variety of yarns giving different finished textures and overall appearance.
To end, what better way to present your eggs than in a knitted or crocheted Easter basket which is delightful way to turn a shop bought egg, or even a clutch of hens eggs, into an original and valued gift.
Have a look around the internet and see what you can find. There is a wealth of information out there and a great place to start is at Knitting Pattern Central, or Crochet Pattern Central ‘the’ place to go for free patterns on the web!
